Well, here it is, my first post. One thing I hope to emphasize through my posts is the importance of good shoes and a quality purse. As I mentioned in my bio, I want to show college students how to dress well on a budget. My first insight: shoes and purses are important. These are two things I'm always willing to splurge on for two reasons: 1. they can make or break the outfit 2. poor quality is obvious. This week I'm sporting my favorite high top white Converse All Stars and my mom's vintage Louis Vuitton purse. Now clearly a Louis Vuitton is not something I would consider to be in a college student's budget, but let me share my first tip: it's okay to go shopping in your mom's closet. In fact, over the years I've collected some of my favorite pieces from my mom (she's not always happy about it), including the Louis purse. Yes, I know your mom's closet can be a scary place filled with "mom-jeans," frumpy sweaters, and turtlenecks, but don't be afraid. Take some time and go through it all, you might just be surprised at what you can find. However, if you are looking to seriously splurge on a purse just click on the Louis Vuitton link above. I've added a link to an AMAZING website called Trendlee which sells pre-owned designer bags for a fraction of their original prices (shout out to Mary Seng of Happily Grey for this find.) Okay, now the shoes. I have been and always will be a fan of beat up sneakers. When I say beat up sneakers I don't mean your ratty old sketchers from the sixth grade, I'm talking a well broken in pair of classic sneakers. CLASSIC CONVERSE ALL STARS. They add a sense of character to any outfit and are a basic necessity in every closet. I tend to wear mine with my favorite jeans and a t-shirt, but have paired them here with printed high waisted shorts from Urban Outfitters and an embroidered tank from Forever 21, both of which were purchased for under $25. The classic Converse All Stars are a durable, well-made shoe for an affordable price. I've had the above pair for about 4 years now and they've definitely paid for themselves with the amount of use I have gotten out of them. I will without a doubt have a pair in my closet now and for many years to come. Lesson(s) of the Week: Shopping in your mom's closet is a great way to enhance your wardrobe without spending a dime. Moms are notorious for keeping old clothes, purses, shoes, etc. that can add a cool vintage vibe to your look, don't be afraid to have a look in her closet. Also, get yourself a pair of classic sneakers! They're affordable, timeless, and a great addition to your shoe collection.
